September 1, 2020 – The United States Air Force will begin construction on a $403 Million energy savings performance contract with Schneider Electric (SE) this upcoming January at the Yokota Air Base located in Fussa, Japan. CTS will be working with YMC Heating & Air, a Boise HVAC company as well as SE to install and commission instrumentation for the existing Boiler upgrades for the 3 hot water and steam generation plants across the base. The three companies will also be working together to build a 10 MW combined heat and power (CHP) plant with microgrid controls to enhance energy efficiency for more than 450 buildings across the base.
The total savings for the USAF at Yakota is expected at around $12 million per year with carbon dioxide emission being reduced by approximately 33,000 metric tons per year.
Located approximately 45 km from downtown Tokyo, Yokota Air Base is a critical hub for U.S. military operations in the Indo-Pacific region, enabling rapid response and bolstering capabilities for the U.S. and its allies throughout the Pacific. This project helps Yokota Air Base in supporting U.S. strategic priorities in an ever-evolving landscape of geopolitical challenges, and potential grid disruptions due to extreme weather in the Asia-Pacific region.
CTS expects to deploy 6 of its staff to Japan in March to begin work on commissioning all of the instrumentation, valves and remote controls for the 9 boilers being upgraded. The boiler upgrade project has over 1,500 instruments and valves that need commissioned and verified with pre-check and post-install testing and verification.
After completion of the boiler upgrade project CTS anticipates utilizing the same team to commission, pre-check, test and verify over 500 instruments and valves for the CHP plant project.
